Punta Explosion!

Garifuna Culture & History

The first annual Punta Explosion comes to Boston.

Sunday September 19, 2004 -  Ceylon Park, Dorchester

The Punta Explosion is a celebration of cultural unity and diversity. The explosion is made up of the Central American Community and local businesses. The Musical lineup is centered around the mainstream music of Central America, “Punta Rock.” Punta Rock is the contemporary electronic offshoot of an ancestral rhythm and dance of the Garifuna people of Central America performed during celebrations. Punta Rock became powerful by carrying messages to develop cultural awareness and to educate. Originality and culture are the basic principles. Punta Rock is a strong force for the development of cultural awareness and for strengthening national identity among all ethnic groups of Central America. For more information about Punta Rock and the Garifuna people go to www.babakle.com.

“A wide variety of vendors will be in attendance, selling everything from arts and crafts to traditional Central American foods.” says Sendy Suazo of Lobaproductions one of the events producers.

This event features music legends like Omar “Babakle” Suazo and Band and Mando Ballesterso and Band.

“There has been extremely successful Punta Rock concerts and festivals in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Now Boston’s Central American community has its own special day.” Said Vanessa Kerr-King, WETV concert coproducer.
